Telluride CO Area Guide

Couple with moving boxesNestled within a box canyon, the small mountain town of Telluride is located in San Miguel County, Colorado. This southwestern Colorado community once was a former silver mining camp along the San Miguel River, now Telluride is one of Colorado’s most sought-after residential areas. Just over 2,000 people currently call Telluride home with more and more wishing to move there everyday. The steep, forested mountains and stunning waterfalls surrounding Telluride add to this area’s mass appeal, making it a notable backdrop throughout our nation’s culture. Telluride has been used in several television commercials, is home to an international film festival, has been the subject of an essay by Edward Abbey, songs such as "Smugglers Blues" by Glenn Frey and the eponymous song by Tim McGraw.

Telluride History

During the 1700’s, many were lead to this area with promise of riches residing in the San Juan Mountains, so many folks in fact that a small community and mining outpost were established here. Originally called “Columbia,” the rowdy mining camp became a town in 1878, and changed its name to Telluride. The mine within the town was called Sheridan Mine and was the first in a string of local claims and a tent camp was established in the valley below. Telluride enjoyed immense prosperity during this time and boasted a population of over 5,000 citizens. Though after the silver crash in 1893, the town’s mining legacy quickly dissipated Telluride’s population from thousands to hundreds. The 1970’s brought about a change in the fortunes of the township of Telluride: new materials were being mined and the Telluride Ski Resort opened which brought a renewed sense of worth to this Colorado community. Telluride now has a reputation for world-class skiing and a stunning ambience.
